Veteran's Day
Elmer and Bill sit by the window
Watching the trucks go by
One from Missouri, one from the Bayou
Etta comes up with their pie
A little more coffee, Bill says I used to
Preach down around Baton Rouge
They got ladies of pleasure, they got lots of bars and
They got all the sin they can use
If any among you is sick I will heal him
That's the way I used to say
What if it's a woman, what if I say heal her
Things are so diff'rent today
Elmer allows that it probly don't matter
As long as you do the Lord's work
He picks up his cup and I see the glitter
Of some kind of pin on his shirt
It looks like a medal, maybe a heart
He sees me and then turns away

At breakfast on Veteran's Day
Bill leaves a dollar for Etta the waitress
And stands up to go on his way
He picks up a picture he had on the table
Of him and his wife in a frame
